As the foundational product that essentially established the AI RPG genre upon its launch in 2019, AI Dungeon remains a highly influential force in the market. Operating on a freemium model, it provides players with an open-ended, text-based interactive storytelling environment characterized by maximum creative liberty. No other platform has done more to prove that an AI can run a compelling narrative — and few show the genre’s limitations as clearly.
How It Works
AI Dungeon functions as an interactive narrative generator without rigid, hard-coded game mechanics. Players input text commands dictating their actions, and the AI responds by advancing the narrative dynamically. By 2026, the platform offers a large stable of in-house finetunes and third-party models — eight on the free tier, eighteen on Ultimate — from free workhorses like Muse, Wayfarer Small 2, Hearthfire and Fable up through Nova, Wayfarer Large, Equinox, Hermes 3 405B and DeepSeek V4 Pro. Our model guide sorts the whole lineup by playstyle. Context is allocated per model, not per plan — on Ultimate most models run 32k, but Madness and Fable are capped at 8k and DeepSeek V4 Pro at 4–6k, so the model you pick changes how much of your story is remembered as much as the tier you pay for.
The platform relies entirely on a conversational context window, giving players unparalleled freedom to shape the world without being restricted by dice rolls, character sheets, or complex numerical tracking. This is both its greatest strength and its most fundamental architectural weakness.
Advantages Over Competitors
The primary advantage of AI Dungeon lies in its immediate accessibility and absolute creative freedom. Compared to highly structured competitors like Friends & Fables or RoleForge, AI Dungeon does not require players to understand complex tabletop rules to start playing. It possesses a massive user-generated library of adventures and allows for fluid, uninterrupted play.
Recent updates have introduced an “Unchained” experience, providing ad-free, unlimited play on the free-tier models for all free users — effectively eliminating the frustrating energy and action-point systems of previous iterations and converting legacy actions into scales. A dedicated Steam version is also available, where a one-time purchase unlocks advanced settings and offline flexibility.
What It Does Best (and Worst)
AI Dungeon excels at facilitating emergent, unrestricted storytelling, casual asynchronous multiplayer sessions, and dream-logic narratives where the constraints of reality simply don’t matter. It is the best platform available for players who want to be the author of something genuinely strange.
However, it is fundamentally worse at maintaining long-term structural consistency. Because the platform treats every session as a continuous text generation task rather than a database-backed simulation, players who want a strict mechanical RPG experience will find it severely lacking. The world does not persist — it is regenerated.
Limitations
The AI’s memory is inherently fragile. It frequently hallucinates past events, arbitrarily resurrects deceased characters, and ignores spatial logic when the context window fills. While premium tiers expand this context significantly, the underlying architecture still struggles to retain intricate campaign details over dozens of sessions without external scaffolding. This is not a bug that patches will fix — it is a consequence of the core design.
Pricing
| Plan | Monthly Cost | Max Context | Monthly Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wanderer | Free | up to 4k tokens | 0 |
| Journey | $14.99 | up to 8k tokens | 760 |
| Legend | $29.99 | up to 16k tokens | 1,650 |
| Mythic | $49.99 | up to 32k tokens | 2,750 |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | up to 32k tokens | 5,200 |
The context figure is a headline, not a guarantee — each model gets its own allocation, and some sit far below the number on the tin while one sits above it. Muse gets 16k on Journey and 32k on Legend, both beyond the advertised ceiling. Madness and Fable are stuck at 8k on every paid tier. DeepSeek V4 Pro gets 4–6k on Ultimate, the narrowest window on the plan. Our model guide has the full per-model table for all five tiers — including why Legend can be worth the same as Ultimate depending on what you play.
This same subscription also covers Voyage, Latitude’s structured successor — one plan, both products.
Above Ultimate sit three unadvertised “Shadow” plans — Banshee $246.66, Reaper $496.66, and Apocalypse $996.66 per month — which cover both products the same way but are visible only from inside an account. The context benefit lands on the AI Dungeon side: each Shadow step doubles the context of the one below it, for models not already at their ceiling. They’re aimed squarely at players who were buying credit packs repeatedly rather than at anyone playing normally — Latitude’s own documentation says plainly that they aren’t the right option for the average player, or even the above-average one.
Two practical notes if you’re considering one. Shadow Clan is effectively a family plan: each tier grants slots (2 on Banshee, 3 on Reaper, 6 on Apocalypse) that you spend gifting premium access to other people, priced at 1 slot for a Journey plan up to 6 for an Ultimate. And Shadow tiers are web-only, monthly-only — no annual discount, no in-app purchase, and an existing App Store or Play Store subscription has to be cancelled first.
Our interview with Latitude CEO Nick Walton has the full table and his reasoning for keeping them off the pricing page.
Verdict
AI Dungeon is undeniably the most accessible and culturally significant AI RPG on the market. It suffers from architectural limitations around memory and mechanical consistency that newer platforms have since solved, but it remains the fastest route from zero to a running narrative. If you want creative freedom above all else, nothing comes close. If you want a world that remembers you six months later, look elsewhere.
